Planned giving officers and professional advisors will gain an understanding of specific charitable vehicles and assets to help identify prospective donors and discuss these giving techniques in a knowledgeable way. The program will focus on the types of assets and charitable vehicles to be discussed in complex charitable giving conversations. Attendees will also gain an understanding of giving opportunities under the Securing a Strong Retirement Act (SECURE Act 2.0) and the recent Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023.

About Our Speakers:
Richard R. Gans is a shareholder in the Sarasota, Florida, firm of Fergeson Skipper, P.A. Mr. Gans is certified by The Florida Bar as a specialized Wills, Trusts and Estates Lawyer, and is a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC). He is active in the Real Property, Probate and Trust Law Section of The Florida Bar. Mr. Gans is the current vice-chair of the Section’s Asset Protection Committee, and is past chair of the Section’s Estate and Trust Tax Planning and Wills, Trusts and Estates Certification Exam CLE course committees. Mr. Gans is a member and past President of the Southwest Florida Estate Planning Council and the Charitable Gift Planners of Southwest Florida. He is past chair of the Board of Directors of the Community Foundation of Sarasota County, Inc., and is a Director of the Sarasota Woman’s Exchange. Mr. Gans has been named by Best Lawyers in America as a 2012, 2016, 2018, and 2021 as “Lawyer of the Year” for Trusts and Estates Law in Sarasota. He has been selected in 2007-2022 as a Florida Super Lawyer, in 2008-2022 as a Florida Trend Legal Elite, and in 2010-2022 by Best Lawyers in America. Mr. Gans plays tuba in the Sarasota Concert Band and the Lakewood Ranch Wind Ensemble. He has attended the Indianapolis 500 39 times.
Betsy Pennewill, J.D. serves as General Counsel to the Community Foundation of Sarasota County. She is responsible for managing the legal duties and responsibilities of the organization to protect the organization’s interests and to ensure that all State and Federal laws are followed. She facilitates complex gift transactions and business transactions on behalf of the organization, reviews and negotiates foundation contracts, and provides support to the foundation donors and related organizations. She stays current in all charitable giving legal matters and is responsible for fostering excellent relationships with professional advisors and stewards a portfolio of donors.
Betsy received her law degree magna cum laude from Stetson University College of Law in 1998. She practiced in corporate lending transactions, real estate matters, and estate planning and administration prior to joining the Community Foundation of Sarasota County in 2015.
Betsy sits on the Public Policy Committees of Philanthropy Southeast and Florida Philanthropic Network and is a member of Charitable Gift Planners of Southwest Florida (Board Member 2015-2021; Chair 2020). She is a member of The Florida Bar and its Real Property, Probate and Trust Law Section; the Manatee County Bar Association; the Sarasota County Bar Association, the Southwest Florida Estate Planning Council, the Estate Planning Council of Manatee County and the Venice Estate Planning Council.
